The Kozhikode District Panchayath forms significant local self government unit, an above of the three teir Panchayath system which came into existence in accordance with 73rd constitutional amendment and Panchayath Raj act of the government of India, It is a local government with powers and responsibilities envisaged in the constitution of India. Before the constitutional amendment, it was the Malabar district Board and after the re-organization of the state, the Kozhikode District Council that were the pre runners of the district of Panchayath.
The present district panchayath come into existance in 1996 with 12 block panchayath and 70 grama panchayath under it which forms the other tires of district governance. The district has one city corporation and 7 Municipal corporations in parallel with the district panchayath
The district panchayath has 27 divisions. One represetative each elected from their divisions constitute the District Panchayath Board. The board elects its president and Vice President. The present president is Sri. Babu Parassery and Vice President Reena Mundangad. There are four standing committee chairman who together with President and Vice President forms the governing body of the District Panchayath. The secretary of the district panchayath is appointed by the government of Kerala.
The District Panchayath is responsible for the welfare of the people in general their educations and health as per the overall development of infrastructure like roads, energy, water supply etc..
